## History of Kasımpaşa Mevlevihanesi

Source: the lodge's own history page (kasimpasamevlevihanesi.com/tarihce), which cites Yücel (1979), Tanman (1994) and Evliya Çelebi.

- 1623–1631: Founded by Sheikh Sırrı Abdi Dede, a dervish of the Galata lodge, on a garden plot he owned in Kasımpaşa. It was the third Mevlevi lodge in Istanbul, after Galata and Yenikapı. Evliya Çelebi records that it was built in the reign of Murad IV.
- 1631: Abdi Dede dies and is buried in the open tomb in the lodge garden.
- 1731–32: Repaired by one Hasan Ağa, to a survey drawn up by Kayserili Mehmed Ağa, chief architect of the Tulip Era.
- 1796: Rebuilt by Mihrişah Valide Sultan and her son Selim III, a Mevlevi devotee and a composer of Mevlevi music.
- 1834–35: The largest restoration, under Mahmud II, recorded in the poem over the courtyard gate. Grand admiral Tahir Pasha buys the neighbouring houses to enlarge the lodge.
- 1925: In December, Law No. 677 closes every dervish lodge in Turkey. The ceremony hall is given to a wrestling club, which holds a New Year's ball in it; part of the building becomes a school.
- 1945: Seyfeddin Dede, the last sheikh of the lodge, dies.
- 1979: A spring fire destroys the wooden lodge. Only the stone stairs, the gate with its inscription and the small graveyard survive. The inscription from the ceremony-hall door now stands in the garden of the Galata Mevlevi lodge.
- 2018: The General Directorate of Foundations is rebuilding the lodge in its original form, on its original plot.
- 11 May 2024: The lodge reopens, 99 years after the closure, run by the İnsan ve İrfan Foundation. A chronogram poem over the new entrance encodes the Hijri year 1445. The first Sema is held on 18 May 2024.

## Questions and answers

### Where can I see the whirling dervishes in Istanbul?

The Sema is held as worship, with visitors admitted, at Kasımpaşa Mevlevihanesi, a Mevlevi lodge in Beyoğlu, every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday at 17:00. Staged whirling dervish shows run most evenings in Sirkeci and Sultanahmet, the best known at the Hodjapasha Culture Center. The Galata Mevlevi House is a museum.

### When is the whirling dervish ceremony?

At Kasımpaşa Mevlevihanesi, every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday at 17:00 Istanbul time. Live dates and seats are on the tickets page.

### How long is the whirling dervish ceremony?

About an hour. It opens with a short introduction by the resident sheikh in Turkish and English, then the music begins, the dervishes enter, and the turning comes in four salutations. There is no interval.

### Is it a show or a religious ceremony?

At Kasımpaşa it is a religious ceremony. The Sema is held as worship in a working Mevlevi lodge, introduced by its sheikh, and visitors watch in silence. There are no light effects and no applause. Theatre, restaurant and cruise versions elsewhere in the city are staged shows.

### Can I take photos at the ceremony?

No. Photography, video and applause are not allowed during the ceremony, and phones should be silenced or switched off. It is a prayer, and the dervishes are not performing for a camera.

### What should I wear?

Modest clothing, out of respect for a place of worship. Covered shoulders and knees are the safe choice for everyone. Comfortable shoes help: the lodge is reached by steep lanes.

### Can I bring children?

Yes. There is no minimum age, but the hall is silent for the whole hour, and crying or chatter carries. It suits children who can sit still and quiet for that long.

### Should I clap at the end?

No. Applause is not part of a prayer. The ceremony ends with a recitation and a prayer, and the hall stays silent until the dervishes have left.

### Is there an explanation in English?

Yes. The lodge's resident sheikh introduces the ceremony in Turkish and English before it begins, and booklets are available in Turkish, English, Arabic and Persian.

### Do I pay online?

No. You reserve online without a card and pay at the door. The current price, and how late you can cancel for free, are shown on the tickets page and come straight from the lodge's booking system.

### Is the lodge wheelchair accessible?

Yes. The lodge has an elevator and step-free access to the ceremony hall. The streets around it are steep, so arrive by taxi to the door on Keramet Sokak.

### How do I get to Kasımpaşa Mevlevihanesi?

It is in Beyoğlu, about 15 minutes' walk from Şişhane metro station (M2), 16 minutes from Galata Tower and 20 minutes from Taksim Square, down steep lanes. A taxi is easiest; ask for Keramet Sokak, Kasımpaşa. Ferries on the Üsküdar–Eyüp and Kadıköy–Eyüp lines stop at Kasımpaşa pier, a 10-minute walk away.

### When should I arrive?

Twenty to thirty minutes before 17:00. The lane is narrow and easy to walk past, staff meet guests at the main gate on Keramet Sokak, and the introduction starts on time.

### Can I see whirling dervishes for free in Istanbul?

Not on any regular schedule. We could not find a free, regularly held public Sema anywhere in Istanbul in 2026: the lodges, the AKM cultural centre and the staged shows all sell tickets. Semazens sometimes appear at municipal or festival events, but only occasionally. The Galata Mevlevi House is a paid museum.

### Can women be whirling dervishes?

Officially, the Mevlevi semazens have always been men. There are early accounts of women turning among themselves, and some groups today include women, which traditionalists dispute. The ceremony at Kasımpaşa is performed by men. Women are welcome as visitors.

### Why don't whirling dervishes get dizzy?

Training. Semazens learn to turn with the left foot never leaving the floor, pushing round with the right, the head tilted and the gaze soft, silently saying "Allah" with each turn. As with dancers and skaters, long practice teaches the balance system to quieten its response.

### What does the whirling dervish symbolise?

The turn is a form of remembrance of God. The right palm faces up to receive and the left faces down to pass it on; the tall hat stands for the tombstone of the ego and the white skirt for its shroud.
