The best whirling dervish show in Istanbul, compared

What we can promise is that every fact below was checked at its source on 19 September 2026, that we point to other venues' own pages rather than resellers', and that we say plainly when another option suits you better. Two kinds of evening

Whirling dervish evenings in Istanbul come in two kinds, and most disappointment comes from booking one while expecting the other.

• A ceremony in a lodge. The Sema is a prayer, held in a mevlevihane, a Mevlevi lodge, and led by its sheikh. Visitors are admitted to watch. It is slow, silent and ends without applause.
• A staged ceremony or show. Real semazens and live musicians, often very good, but in a converted hall, theatre, restaurant or boat, scheduled for visitors. Some present it as a spiritual ceremony, some as a show.

Neither is wrong. They are different evenings. How to tell them apart before you book.

Kasımpaşa Mevlevihanesi

A Mevlevi lodge founded between 1623 and 1631, the third in Istanbul after Galata and Yenikapı. It was closed with every other lodge in 1925, burned down in 1979, and was rebuilt on its original plot and reopened on 11 May 2024. The Sema is held in its octagonal ceremony hall three evenings a week, with about 180 seats on the floor and in the gallery above. The resident sheikh introduces it in Turkish and English, and guests can ask questions afterwards. It is the one venue on this list where you are attending a lodge's own ceremony rather than a performance of one.

The honest downsides: the lodge is in Kasımpaşa, not the old city, down steep lanes that many guests find hard the first time; the ceremony is at 17:00, not in the evening; and it runs three days a week, not seven. How to get there. Dates and seats.

Hodjapasha Culture Center

The best-known whirling dervish evening in Istanbul, in a double bathhouse from the reign of Mehmed II, converted into a round hall and restored as a culture centre in 2008. It runs every night at 19:00, plus a cheaper 17:00 slot four days a week. Its own programme lists a 5-minute introductory film, 10 minutes of Sufi music and 45 minutes of Sema, which is more turning than a lodge ceremony, where the music and the walk come first. There is an exhibition, children under 7 are not admitted, photography is not allowed, and the hall is not wheelchair accessible. Latecomers may enter only in the first ten minutes.

Choose it if you are staying in Sultanahmet, want an evening slot, or cannot make Wednesday, Friday or Sunday. More on Hodjapasha.

The Sultanahmet shows

Several smaller operators run evenings in the old city, most sold through booking sites rather than the venue. The Hoca Rüstem Medresesi, a former theological college, is listed by its operator for 19:00 six days a week, with photography allowed. The show at Sirkeci railway station is not running: the station's historic halls closed for restoration in August 2025, and the operator has moved it to Sultanahmet. Cistern evenings are sold by booking sites, but the cisterns' own websites do not mention them, so check who runs the one you book.

Reviews of these evenings on booking sites return to the same points: a lot of music before any turning, no explanation, crowded rooms where some seats have no view, and meeting points that are not the venue. Ask for the building's name and put it in a map before you pay.

Other lodges, and the AKM

Two historic Istanbul lodges hold occasional ceremonies. Bahariye Mevlevihanesi, on the Golden Horn in Eyüpsultan, hosts a monthly evening with a Mesnevi talk and a full mukabele by the Culture Ministry's historical Turkish music ensemble, about two hours long; no upcoming date is listed. Yenikapı Mevlevihanesi holds a few ceremonies a year, announced a few weeks ahead. The Atatürk Cultural Centre (AKM) in Taksim runs a monthly theatre evening that combines the Sema with digital art; its next dates are 6 October and 5 November 2026.

The Galata Mevlevi House

The oldest Mevlevi lodge in Istanbul, founded in 1491, is now a state museum: open 09:00 to 19:00, closed on Mondays, with an entry fee set by the Ministry of Culture. Many websites still print a Sunday ceremony there with a time and a price, but they disagree with each other, and neither the ministry nor the museum lists one. Visit it for the building. Dinner shows and Bosphorus cruises

Many dinner shows and evening cruises include a dervish among folk dancers and a belly dancer, usually for a few minutes. It can be a fun night out. It is not a Sema, and nobody involved will claim it is.

Which one should you book?

• You want the rite, as prayer: Kasımpaşa Mevlevihanesi, Wednesday, Friday or Sunday at 17:00.
• You want the most turning: Hodjapasha, which gives 45 of its 60 minutes to the Sema.
• You are free only on a Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday: Hodjapasha or a Sultanahmet show.
• You want to photograph the dervishes: a staged show that allows it. Lodges and Hodjapasha do not.
• You use a wheelchair: Kasımpaşa, which has a lift. Hodjapasha says its theatre is not suitable.
• You have a child under 7: Kasımpaşa admits them if they can sit quietly; Hodjapasha and the AKM do not.
• You are going to Konya: see Konya or Istanbul.

It depends on what you want. For the rite itself, in a working lodge with an introduction by its sheikh, Kasımpaşa Mevlevihanesi (Wednesday, Friday, Sunday at 17:00). For a well-run nightly show in the old city, the Hodjapasha Culture Center in Sirkeci (daily at 19:00).

Where can I see the most authentic whirling dervishes in Istanbul?
