Free whirling dervishes in Istanbul: what is true in 2026

We could not find a free whirling dervish ceremony held regularly in Istanbul in 2026. The lodges, the AKM cultural centre and the staged shows all sell tickets, and the free Sunday ceremony at the Galata Mevlevi House that older guides mention is no longer listed anywhere official. The ceremony at Kasımpaşa Mevlevihanesi costs $26, paid at the door.

Checked against its sources on .

Search for a free whirling dervish ceremony in Istanbul and you will find several confident answers. Most of them trace back to older guides that describe a Sunday ceremony at the Galata Mevlevi House with a small entry fee, or a free weekly ceremony in Konya. Neither matches what the venues publish today.

What we checked

  • The lodges. Kasımpaşa, Bahariye and Yenikapı all sell tickets for their ceremonies.
  • Galata. A paid state museum. No official page lists a public ceremony.
  • The AKM. The Atatürk Cultural Centre's monthly Sema evening is ticketed, on the AKM's own site.
  • Staged shows. All ticketed.
  • Festivals. Semazens do appear at municipal events and festivals, sometimes free. The Istanbul leg of the Türkiye Culture Route Festival runs from 26 September to 4 October 2026; when we checked, its published programme listed no Sema. Watch it anyway.
  • Konya. The weekly Saturday ceremony at the Mevlana Cultural Center is ticketed. The Mevlana Museum, Rumi's tomb, is free.

Why the ceremonies charge

Kasımpaşa Mevlevihanesi is run by a non-profit foundation, not by the state, and the ticket pays for the hall, the musicians and the upkeep of a rebuilt wooden lodge. It also covers the introduction by the sheikh, the lodge's two small exhibitions and a booklet in four languages.

A genuine ceremony, paid at the door

The lodge ceremony at Kasımpaşa Mevlevihanesi is held every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday at 17:00. It costs $26 per person, and you pay at the door rather than in advance. See dates.

Questions people ask

Is there a free whirling dervish show in Istanbul?
Not on a regular schedule, as far as we could find in September 2026. Semazens sometimes appear at municipal or festival events, but only occasionally.
Is the Galata Mevlevi House ceremony free?
The Galata Mevlevi House is a paid museum, and no official source currently lists a public ceremony there.
Is the whirling dervish ceremony in Konya free?
No. The weekly Saturday ceremony at the Mevlana Cultural Center in Konya is ticketed. The Mevlana Museum in Konya, Rumi's tomb, is free to enter.
What is the cheapest way to see whirling dervishes in Istanbul?
The AKM's monthly evening had the lowest ticket prices we found, but it runs only on published dates. Of the weekly options, compare the lodge ceremony at Kasımpaşa ($26, paid at the door) with Hodjapasha's 17:00 show, which Hodjapasha sells for less than its 19:00 show, on its official booking page.
