You do not need special clothes to attend a whirling dervish ceremony, and no one checks you at the door. But the ceremony at Kasımpaşa Mevlevihanesi is a prayer held in a working lodge, and the lodge asks visitors to dress modestly out of respect. Dress as you would to visit a mosque or a church service.

A simple checklist

  • Shoulders covered. A T-shirt or shirt with sleeves, or a light layer over a vest top.
  • Knees covered. Long trousers, or a skirt or dress below the knee.
  • Nothing see-through or very tight.
  • Comfortable, grippy shoes. The lanes to the lodge are steep and can be slippery when wet.
  • A layer. You will sit still for an hour, and the walk or taxi back is after sunset for half the year.

For women

The lodge's published guidance asks all visitors for modest clothing and does not mention a head covering. Many women bring a light scarf anyway, to cover shoulders or hair if they wish; it is a good thing to carry in Istanbul, where you may also visit mosques that do require one.
