The Galata Mevlevi House today: museum hours, and where the Sema is
The Galata Mevlevi House, founded in 1491 and the oldest Mevlevi lodge in Istanbul, is now a state museum, open 09:00 to 19:00 and closed on Mondays. In September 2026 neither the Culture Ministry nor the museum listed a public whirling dervish ceremony there, and the websites that print one disagree on its day, time and price. The Galata Mevlevi House, in Turkish Galata Mevlevihanesi, stands on Galip Dede Caddesi, the steep street that runs from Tünel down towards Galata Tower. Founded in 1491, it was the first Mevlevi lodge in Istanbul and for four centuries its most important. Its ceremony hall, rebuilt after fires in the 18th century, is the one most often photographed in books about the dervishes. It is well worth an hour of your day.
What it is today
Like every lodge in Turkey, Galata was closed in 1925. It opened as the Museum of Divan Literature in 1975, was restored between 2005 and 2009, and reopened as the Galata Mevlevihanesi Museum in 2011. It is run by the Ministry of Culture.

Is there still a ceremony?
This is the question we are asked most about Galata, and the honest answer is that we could not confirm one. When we checked in September 2026:
- The Ministry's own page for the museum mentioned no ceremony.
- The ticketing site that has sold Istanbul's lodge ceremonies showed no events at Galata, and the older listing used by guidebooks no longer led to an event.
- Travel sites still describe a Sunday ceremony, but give different times (17:00 or 18:00), different prices and different ways to buy tickets.
That pattern, many confident pages that disagree with each other and no official page at all, usually means the information has been copied forward from an older year. One guest who reviewed the Kasımpaşa ceremony in 2026 put it simply: tickets for Galata had been impossible to find. If you want to see a Sema at Galata, phone the museum before you plan your evening around it.
Where to see the Sema instead
The closest weekly ceremony in a working lodge is at Kasımpaşa Mevlevihanesi, founded in the 1620s by Sırrı Abdi Dede, himself a dervish of the Galata lodge. It is about 16 minutes' walk from Galata Tower, downhill through the lanes towards the Golden Horn. The Sema is held there every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday at 17:00, introduced by the lodge's sheikh in Turkish and English.
